Artist’s Statement:

Painting is a deep process and feels much like meditating. Each piece has it’s own energy that evolves and grows out of the paint and paper I apply. Very often, I might have one idea and then the painting changes course and becomes something entirely different. Art is alive and brings up deep feelings in both the artist and viewer. My art is not static but more like painting music.

Although I used to paint “pictures” of recognizable subjects I now find making abstracts to be more satisfying and on some level, I feel like my inner voice is coming out in this process. I dive into these pieces. Sometimes I drown in them for a while and then I come up with a finished piece. When a painting is done, I know it. And then I do not touch it again.

Abstract painting is not just a random hit or miss affair. Abstracts must have balance and good colors and of course, energy. Just as intuition is really made up of years of unconscious learning, my paintings draw on years of looking at the world with an artist’s eye, understanding the painting process, technique and passion.

My pieces are primarily Acrylics on canvas but most of them include paper collage elements and are very textural. I also like to scratch into them, throw paint, glaze and use spray paint. I use brushes, rollers, my hands, spackle knives, and really anything I can get my hands on, including sticks, combs or other implements.

Making these large paintings can be an exhausting, physical process; but it is an incredible journey. I hope the viewer can feel some of my art’s energy and find something new and interesting every time they look at one of my pieces.
